P.Raja speaks to you

“Primarily I am an entertainer. The thirty five years of experience on my back as an English language teacher has taught me the art of entertaining others. My secondary purpose is to show you the world through my eyes, perhaps with a tinge of imagination. I want to show you something that you have missed to see. It matters little to me whether you nod your head with a smile or grit your teeth in contempt. Either way I have succeeded in evoking a response from you”.

Sometime in 1988, Govt. of Korea conducted Seoul Poetry Olympiad to coincide with Seoul Olympic Games. In the anthology of prize-winning poems, 'World Poetry - 1988' only five poems represented India. Dr.P.Raja, a Professor of English Literature, Tagore Arts College, Pondicherry was one among them.

A son of this soil, Pondicherry, famed for its spiritual heritage, P.Raja writes in his chosen language, English, and also in his mother tongue, Tamil. More than 3000 of his works - poems, short stories, interviews, articles, book reviews, plays, skits, features and novellas - have seen the light through newspapers and magazines that number to 300 in both India and elsewhere.

Apart from contributing special articles to Encyclopaedia of Post-Colonial Literature in English (London), Encyclopaedia of Tamil Literature in English, and to several other edited volumes, he has also written scripts for Television (Delhi). He broadcasts his short stories and poems from All India Radio, Pondicherry.

P.Raja was born on October 07, 1952 at Olandai-Keerapalayam, a village in Pondicherry. His father, M.Purushothaman, was a clerk in Rodier Mill, later known as Anglo-French Textiles, Pondicherry, and his knowledge of French, English and Tamil helped him work as a translator too for his English and French officers. His mother, Sagunthala, managed the home and the kitchen. He graduated in English Literature from Tagore Arts College, and then moved to Annamalai University (Tamilnad) for his post-graduation. He holds a Ph.D. degree from Madras University.

A voracious reader from his college days, he began his writing career when he was barely twenty-four. A book-reviewer and translator for a start, he wielded his pen in all genres of literature and consistently continues to be so.

Prof.P.Raja is married to his boyhood sweetheart, Periyanayaki. And the couple live with their children and grandchildren.
